Here is a checklist to help a grower see what his risk might be for white mold and some management measures with rates.

The first section Field history is pretty easy to get above the 50 points and it was intended to be that way. This is the inoculum part of the disease triangle, are the spore present. Remember this in that particular field; most of these fields were corn last year. They need to think back to 2 years ago.

The second section Current Conditions is more important, as it about the current conditions that may give the second part of the disease triangle, the environment. Note: Question 9 refers to the high temp for the day.
The third section is looking at whether it will be economical to use Cobra or fungicide.

The last is some management strategies using either fungicide or Cobra. With all of these timing is critical, a grower cannot wait until they see symptoms it is really too late. Please work through this with your growers we do not want this checklist to be used to recommend a treatment if it is not necessary.

Example 1:

A grower scores 110 on section 1, and scores 100 in section 2, but because of late planting he scores 0 for section 3. He does not need to spray. If the canopy has not closed that significantly reduces his risk for 2 reasons: one UV light kills the spores, and two better air flow to dry out the plants quicker.

Example 2:

A grower scores 60 on section 1 and 60 in section 2, and planted very early, has high fertility, and narrow rows with a dense canopy and scores 80 on section 3. He needs to spray.

Example 3:

A grower scores 50 on section 1 and 50 in section 2, and planted average time is just starting to get canopy closure and has a tolerant variety and scores 40 on section 3. This is a tougher call because it right on the bubble and adding a tolerant variety may be enough not to consider an application or not. These are the ones we need to work closely with the grower and understand what risk vs. rewards he is willing to take. The first to examples are easy calls, it is the 3rd one that requires you to work with him to get the right recommendation to spray or not. There will be a lot more examples of 3 then there will be 1 and 2. This is not a checklist you give to your dealers and just walk away because it could be misused if not all factors are taken into consideration. Click here for checklist.
